Decatur sits on the Tennessee River in Morgan County, opening directly onto Wheeler Lake, a TVA reservoir of roughly 68,300 acres and Alabama's second-largest lake. Point Mallard Park

Opened in 1970, Point Mallard is roughly 500 acres of parkland anchored by one of America's first wave pools at the J. Gilmer Blackburn Aquatic Center. The Cook Museum of Natural Science

Downtown, the Cook Museum of Natural Science at 133 4th Ave NE opened its current location in 2019 and was voted Best New Museum in the United States by USA Today's 10Best shortly after. It holds a 15,000-gallon saltwater aquarium, live animals, and thousands of insect displays, which makes it a serious destination for families rather than a token field trip.

The commute

Huntsville is about 26 miles from southwest Decatur, typically a 25 to 30 minute drive via I-565 and US-72 Alternate. That puts Huntsville's jobs, research parks, and airport within commuting range while keeping the house in a quieter town with lower-key traffic.

The schools
